Challenge Brief - COP26 - It's 2040

Part 1

We would like you to travel to 2040 and describe what climate change looks like then. Has climate change slowed, has it sped up, is it still the same? Did it maybe change course altogether? Why might that be? What have people done?

It’s 2040 and climate change has ………………..

because everyone ……………….

We would like you to fill in the blanks of the sentence above by Friday 12th November.

Part 2

On Monday 15th November we will launch Part 2. For this we would like to know what you did between now and 2040 by using one of the Part 1 provocations as a starting point.

You will find these provocations on the Brave Times and Maker Mondays websites.

Place yourself in 2040 with your chosen provocation and tell us:

What did you do?

For instance, if your selected provocation is: It’s 2040 and climate change has slowed down because everyone changed their eating habits, you can tell us what you did between now and 2040.

  • You can choose how to tell your story. It could be through film, photography, song, poetry, words.
Be creative and tell your story without identifying who you are. You can think of a graphical story
or a stop motion film that uses a fictive character and share with the Brave Times team at hello@creativebravery.com

You can find examples of storytelling on www.thebravetimes.com

  • Or, if you would like to create an innovative solution to the provocation that you have chosen you can
use the Maker Mondays workbook which you can download at www.makermondays.co.uk

Maker Mondays aims to encourage the development of creativity skills and problem solving by introducing the use of the design thinking process. This creative process supports people to understand a challenge and how it might affect others by asking what, why, who, where, when, how questions, using these to direct research.  Then it’s the fun bit, reflecting on the research and imagining and drawing lots of creative ideas to begin to solve the challenge and then refining and building on these ideas to create prototypes to work towards the best solution for the problem.

You can share your final solutions with the Maker Mondays team at creativelearning@stirling.gov.uk or
upload via the website.

You can work individually or in small groups for both challenges.

The deadline for submissions of the COP26 Challenge Part 2 to the Brave Times and Maker Mondays is anytime up until Friday 28th January 2022.

A selection of writing, podcasting, film, innovations and other creations will be shared on both websites as they are shared with us and after the deadline in January.

For further information about our COP26 Challenges please go to Maker Mondays or the Brave Times websites from 1st November 2021.

If you need further information please contact us via both websites or:

About The Brave Times

This international newspaper is designed by young people for young people. It showcases what is currently happening to our planet and shares inspiring articles to create appetite for change. The Brave Times aims to unpack how we behave and live as humans, and how this effects the planet. With a better understanding of what we have and with inspiring initiatives, we can imagine what the future human habitat could look like and start making a change.

About Maker Mondays

Designed for use by schools in Stirling, Scotland, Maker Mondays will be opened up for everyone to use during this COP26 Challenge…and hopefully beyond in 2022.

Maker Mondays aims to encourage the development of creativity skills and problem solving by introducing the use of the design thinking process.  This creative process supports children and young people to understand a challenge and how it might affect others by asking what, why, who, where, when, how, questions and using these to direct research.  Then it’s the fun bit, reflecting on the research and imagining and drawing lots of creative ideas to begin to solve the challenge and then refining and building on these ideas to create prototypes to work towards the best solution for the problem.

Note: For child and data protection reasons we will not upload creations that have images of children and young people within them.  Any creations that we are sent that do will be deleted immediately. We are also unable to share names or images of entrants on the Maker Mondays website.  Instead you can create an avatar of yourself / your team or let us know your school / college name and town / country and add to your workbook.
